Why this is a
Masterpiece

The bowl from the museum’s collection is a fine specimen of mastery utilization of design options, offered by painting over a black background.

History of the Object
The black background possesses a remarkable feature: any lighter colour, applied to it, comes out particularly bright, literally starts to shine and gets a three-dimensional form. A bright, lustre white design makes the object look vivid and ornate. The scope of decorative techniques applied in the 10th century by Central Asian potters was broad. Samarqand potters exhibited two trends in decoration of the ware in the 10th and 11th centuries. The first one was not to overwork the surface with design, but to leave as much free space as possible. The second trend was to cover the surface with design to the maximum. This bowl was painted in accordance with this idea. The patterns of stylized bines fully cover the bowl, but it does not give an impression of overwork.
