Why this is a
Masterpiece

This is one of the oldest Batak staffs known. It was collected by C.B.H. Baron von Rosenberg, probably in 1843. Von Rosenberg visited the Batak area while being a soldier in the Dutch colonial army. The carving is of very good quality. The figures depicted in the staff resemble 20th century European sculpture. By dr Pieter ter Keurs, Curator Insular Southeast Asian Collections, Leiden.
