Why this is a
Masterpiece

The map of Hamgyeongnam-do indicates Samsu, Gapsan, Dancheon, Iseong, Bukcheong, Hongwon, Hamheung, Deokwon and Anbyeon along the coastline inside the fortress, and it also shows the location of government offices. Counties such as Jangjin, Jeongpyeong, Yeongheung, Gowon and Muncheon are also indicated on the map. The map shows the government offices of Hamheung surrounded by the huge fortress under Seonggwaksan and the tombs of the ancestors of the founder of the Joseon Dynasty – Jeongneung, Hwaneung, Euineung, Sunneung, Deongneung and Anneung – as well as Gyeongheungjeon Palace, with an indication that it was the main palace in which the founder stayed before the dynasty’s foundation.

History of the Object
This map is presumed to be the colored manuscript of Paldodo (Map of Eight Provinces), which was produced under the supervision of Kyeong-Joon Shin under orders from King Yeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty in 1770. This map elaborately depicts both natural elements, such as mountains, streams and islands, and cultural elements, such as place names, stations, warehouses and palaces. These maps are essential to an understanding of the history of maps of the Joseon Dynasty. They emphasize accuracy and have a value as scarce cultural objects, as other maps of the same kind have yet to be found.
