Why this is a
Masterpiece

An extremely fine work of art by a Ceylonese master carver. There are only very few examples known worldwide, one of which is to be found in the "Kunstkammer" of the House of Habsburg in Ambras Castle in Tirol, Austria. Probably those fans were at that time being worked on for the European market and as such are the first examples of tourist art.

History of the Object
This fan was a gift from a ruler of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) to the Royal House of Portugal. From Portugal it was probably given to the House of Wittelsbach in Bavaria and became part of the "Kunstkammer", i.e., the collection of ethnographic curiosities of the House of Wittelsbach. It was mentioned in the inventory of Johann Baptist Fickler in 1598. Later it was part of the "United collections" of the House of Wittelsbach until it was integrated into the Royal Ethnographic Collection in 1868 which later became the State Museum of Ethnography Munich.

Because of the great fragility of its precious material, this fan may have been used as a prestigious object only, which reflected the power and dignity of its owner. Real fans were made from peacock's feathers and were used by servants to fan the ruler with fresh air.
Acquisition
Taken over by the Royal Ethnographic Collection from the so-called "United Collections" of the House of Wittelsbach in 1868.
