Why this is a
Masterpiece

Wooden spoon from North Luzon. This type of spoon can be found in many museum collections. They were made for the external market by the end of the 19th century. This particular spoon is one of the few, of the RMV collection, which shows traces of use and patina. Therefore, it could be illustrative for change from production for the local market to production for the external market. Until now, this aspect of museum collections has not enough been looked at. Museum collections are supposed to be representations of the cultures where the objects come from. In reality the collections are much more representations of the contacts cultures had with collectors. A fascinating subject, which offers an alternative view on old collections as well. By dr Pieter ter Keurs, Curator Insular Southeast Asian Collections, Leiden.

History of the Object
Collected by the famous Philippines expert A. Schadenberg.
