Why this is a
Masterpiece

This woodblock print is a magnificent example of Shigenobu’s rare work with a very high artistic and technical quality mainly for its hand colouring and lacquer (urushi-e).

History of the Object
Ukiyo-e prints by early masters working from 1600 to 1740 were issued in limited numbers and are very rare today. Although very little is known of this master this is an important print depicting a celebrated poet, famous for her spectacular beauty. The poet, Ono no Komachi (ca. 9th Century) is shown standing near a corner of a house in a graceful farewell position. The design of her luxurious kimono contrasts with the geometrical lines of the background.
