It is one of the most interesting and authentic masks from Oceania in the museum's collection, of the type distinctive for Vanuatu archipelago.

History of the Object
The mask was used in the ceremonies of ancestor worship. Bought by the donor at the place of origin. Details of history are not known.

Acquisition
The mask was donated to the Asia and Pacific Museum by Navy Captain Maciej Bocheński, a Polish sailor living in Vanuatu. It was part of his bigger collection. The donation took place in Port Vila in Vanuatu in 1982.
