Why this is a
Masterpiece

The upper part of the body is inlaid with clouds and cranes in black and white and the spout is encircled by thunder and lotus flowers decorations. The small lid is also banded in a thunder design. The beak and the handle have white dots painted in underglaze slip technique allowing raised effect of the decorations. The grayish blue celadon glaze with no cracks on the surface gives gentle luster. The somewhat stylized peony design on the lower part of the body is inlaid in reverse, which means the background is inlaid rather than the design itself. It is believed that this technique was applied to make the design look less busy in cases where the surface was decorated all over. Many celadon ewers reflected the influence of Tang and Song Dynasty porcelain ware. This ewer, however, reveals the distinctive features of Goryeo ceramics in its beautiful lines and embellished details. It is designated as Korean National Treasure No. 116.

History of the Object
Many celadon ewers were made in the gourd shape during the Goryeo period, reflecting the influence of Tang and Song Dynasty porcelain ware.
