Why this is a
Masterpiece

This Ukiyo-e print is one in a complete set of the one hundred woodblock prints that make up the series, "One Hundred Aspects of the Moon" by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. Yoshitoshi is one of the most important artists of 19th century Japan, let alone of Ukiyo-e prints. Each of the woodblock prints in this set is of highest quality and best condition. The print shown here ("Moon Above the Sea at Daimotsu Bay") is particularly rare. Compiling a series of this caliber is an extraordinary feat and took 26 years for the collectors to accomplish.

History of the Object
This was in a private collection, purchased from an art gallery. Then donated to the Museum of International Folk Art.

Acquisition
This collection was given to the Museum of International Folk Art as a gift from Else and Joseph Chapman, who collected each print from private collectors and dealers all over the world. It took about 26 years for the donors to assemble this excellent quality, complete set of the series, "One Hundred Aspects of the Moon." The donors aspired to assemble the best quality, complete set of this series with the knowledge they would donate to a Museum. Interestingly, the last print that they collected to complete the set (a very rare print known as "Benkei in the Boat") was found after a five year search in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
