Masterpiece

One of the few surviving examples of a Korean tradition, this mask echoes representations depicted in genre scenes and Buddhist paintings in the 18th and 19th centuries. Realism, elegance of this mask, portrait of a youthful Shaman, with still the protective cloth to hide the dancer’s face from public gaze.

History of the Object
Acquired in Korea in 1888 by Charles Varat during his expedition to Korea for the French Ministry of Education and Fine Arts. Exhibited in 1889 at the Ethnographic Museum of Trocadero with the Korean collection brought back by Varat during the International Exhibition in Paris. Attributed to the Guimet Museum in 1891 and shown in the first gallery of Korean art which opened in 1893 on the occasion of the first complete renovation of the Guimet Museum.
