Why this is a
Masterpiece

In the Joseon Dynasty, the honorable title of "Hunho" was bestowed along with Noghoongyoseo and a portrait, upon a vassal with distinguished service for the country. As with Yi Wonik, who was bestowed the Hunho title of Hoseonggonshin, only his portrait has been passed down. According to Hoseongseonmucheongnan Gongshindogameuigwae, Yi Wonik was inducted as the 1st rank vassal of merit at the time. But he flatly refused it, lowering himself, and insisted on being recorded as the 2nd rank vassal of merit. This is a portrait that clearly shows the model of 17th century "Vassal of merit". It is a typical full-length portrait in a seated position, with only 70% of its left-side face shown. Also, it is regarded as a work of detailed depiction and accurate expression when compared to other portraits of vassal of merit of a similar period.

History of the Object
This is a portrait painted to commemorate Yi Wonik being recorded in the year of 1604 when he turned 58 for his service of escorting and fleeing with King Seonjo during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1692. In 2005, it was designated as national cultural asset treasure number 1435.
