Why this is a
Masterpiece

The rocky and earthen peaks are depicted using various techniques and harmonized in an ingenious manner with the distinctive, sometimes contrasting features of other parts of the mountains. Jeong Seon is the greatest painter of the landscape paintings of "real scenes", especially the Diamond MountainsDiamond Mountains. This work is the most representative among the Diamond Mountains works for its scale and technique. It is designated as Korean National Treasure No. 217.

History of the Object
Jeong Seon, who was undoubtedly the greatest painter of his time, rose to fame at the age of 37, at which time his album of the Diamond Mountains, known in Korea as the Geumgang Mountains, became widely recognized. He repeatedly visited the mountains to paint the seasonally changing contours and colors of the splendid scenery. Some 100 paintings of the Diamond Mountains by this versatile artist, many of them similar to this piece, exist today. His enthusiasm for the Diamond Mountains had a lasting effect on later Joseon painters, who produced numerous pictures not only as objects of artistic appreciation, but also as geographical maps. The inscription at the top right reads, “Even if you visit the mountain yourself and tread on its every nook and cranny, how can your joy be compared with what you feel upon viewing this picture from your bedside?” The inscription has a date corresponding to 1734, when Jeong was 59 years old.
