Hand scroll painting with scenes of the Dutch and Chinese settlements in Nagasaki

Why this is a
Masterpiece

Life in the Chinese and Dutch settlements in the harbour of the South Japanese town of Nagasaki is illustrated with verve on this long hand scroll. Details that were exotic for Japan are given particular attention, such as greeting by removing your hat, playing a trumpet or smoking a long Gouda pipe. Several paintings exist that depict the two trading posts in a perspective traditionally used in Japanese hand scrolls, and this one, painted with extraordinary craftsmanship, is a good example.
