Why this is a
Masterpiece

This fragment is an example of the rich decoration of Safavid woven textiles that combined the Iranian floral ornamentation tradition with motifs adopted from the arts of the Far East. Our interest in this object is further increased by the circumstances of its history as a collectable on European territory.

History of the Object
A total of five kilim fragments with virtually an identical running pattern were housed in European collections (and with one exception, continue to be housed there). These fragments were considered to be parts of the original silk hanging dating from the Safavid period, which had been divided into parts and sold in Dresden in the final quarter of the 19th century. However, more recent research concluded that the decoration was not entirely identical, which suggests that two nearly identical hangings were divided into matching parts.
