Why this is a
Masterpiece

This pair of masks are masterpieces because they are expressive, beautifully shaped, well preserved and last but not least they have a fascinating historical background.

History of the Object
This pair of masks originates from the Court (kraton) of Sultan Panembahan Tjokro Adiningrat IX of Bangkalan in West Madura who reigned between 1862 and 1882. On November 27th in 1864 he gave it as a gift to Wolf Curt von Schierbrand, a German topographer in Netherlands' East Indies duties, who was Commanding General of the Colonial army at that time. According to his testament Schierbrand disposed this pair of masks together with 70 other Indonesian items to the former “Königliches Museum für Anthropologie und Ethnographie” in Dresden, which already held nearly 1000 objects donated by Schierbrand during his lifetime.
