1479

Why this is a
Masterpiece

It is in perfect condition. The porcelain as well as the decorations are of high quality. In a way this plate is an achievement of the Chinese at that time, one of the first proofs of their mastering the technique. The grape design is not at all Chinese. It is Hellenistic. It came to China in the Tang dynasty around the 6th Century. The plate is excellent, because it is an example of good firing. The plate is also evidence of early trade with China.

History of the Object
The painting of the blue colour is exceptional. To control the colour while applying was very difficult and most probably not yet mastered by the Chinese at that time. The paint often blurred, a special paint was needed. We think that the blue paint arrived in China from the Persian area. Blue and white was not according to Chinese taste at that time, but it was very common in the Persian region.

Acquisition
It was collected by Orsoy de Flines, a Dutch plantation owner, who was an ardent collector of ceramics. He donated his entire collection to the Government of Indonesia in 1959, when he had to leave the country. He died later in the Netherlands in 1964. He collected only ceramics that were found in Indonesia and he never bought objects abroad. He did so because he wanted to contribute to the knowledge of the history of Indonesia with his collection . He found it in Jambi, Sumatera, maybe around 1935. It was part of a complete collection he bought from a family.
