Why this is a
Masterpiece

An excellent example of a votive scroll, painted in the 14th-15th Century. The iconography allows us to identify the God as Buddha Amida with attributes of mercy. On the left side of the artwork is a notice of the creator: “painted by Zhang Yifeng, Buddhist name Hong Zhang, Buddhist monk of Xingzhou monastery, with the trust of generosity of Buddha”. The essence of this being a Masterpiece is its creator, the female monk, Zhang Yifeng.

History of the Object
The scroll was restored in the 18th Century as we can see on the right side of the scroll: “restored in Kangxi, 55 (1716) by hand of Huang Wenxian”.
