Why this is a
Masterpiece

It is a commonly used item which is representative of the daily life of the Korean people.

History of the Object
It has been a typical transportation instrument in Korea for a long time. It can be easily made, and it has many practical uses. The design of a jigae can vary from region to region. In general, the main part is made of pine wood, and it can be customized to fit one’s body shape. Two Y‐shaped pieces of wood are put together and three or four connecting pieces are inserted between the Y‐shaped pieces. Those connecting pieces support one’s back. Also, a straw back‐pad is attached to the connecting pieces to protect one’s back from the chafing of heavy loads. Braided straw and wrapping is strung between the connecting pieces and the feet of the jigae so that it can be carried easily. A thin stick is used for holding up or standing the jigae upright. The length of a jigae can also vary from region to region. Jigaes are longer in open, flat regions than in mountain areas because short jigae are easier to carry when climbing hills. The weight of a jigae is around five and six kilograms and a healthy man can carry a load of up to 50 to 70 kg in it.
