Why this is a
Masterpiece

To date only two banners have been found in the North of Thailand, which makes it an extraordinary rare artifact. The other banner is kept in the National Gallery in Bangkok. A technique from the Ayutthaya period was used to create it, whereby five natural colours were painted on the silk: red, yellow, green, black and white. Iconographically, it is important: it shows the Buddha with his hands at his side.

History of the Object
It was found in 1959 during archaeological rescue operations in the Hot District of Northern Thailand, before the building of a dam,as a result of which a whole area was flooded. Many objects were found in abandoned temples. This banner comes from Wat Chedi Sung. All objects were first sent to the National Museum in Bangkok, some of which were sent to Chiang Mai in 1973.
