Why this is a
Masterpiece

It is one of the most exceptional pieces in the museum's Oriental collection because of its state of preservation and because it preserves the remains of the ritual offerings that prove its ritual function and use of the image in its original culture.

History of the Object
This object is a sample of religious syncretism between Hinduism and Buddhism. The Hindu God Shiva is represented in his terrifying shape as Bhairava, with a collar of human heads and eighteen arms, in which he holds different attributes such as the vajra and the ghanta, featuring elements of e Vajrayane Buddhism. The images of Shiva with his consort Parvati are flanked by their respective mounts: the zebu (nandi) of Shiva and the lion (simha) of Parvati.
