Why this is a
Masterpiece

This fan is one of the special relics, that show a scholar's life during the Chosun Dynasty (1392-1910). Like Chinese fortune cookies in modern Chinese restaurants, a scholar may use the bamboo pieces with Chinese poems in the case attached to the fan for predicting the future in daily life. It makes us understand how people in the past were thinking.

History of the Object
The fan is made collapsible by folding it. This folding fan is supported by 17 spokes and oiled paper. A folding fan is usually adorned with an incense case or compass. A fan in the Chosun Dynasty had various uses, not only for cooling but also for providing shelter from sunlight or wind. It was also used in order to keep time when a gentleman recited ‘Sijo’, a Korean traditional verse.
