Why this is a
Masterpiece

Welding the techniques of Yuan Dynasty painters, Wang Hui made use of a deep perspective and exuberant strokes to cascade color upon the setting and render the continuousness of the mountain range. The tiny streams, deep valleys, bleak autumn forests and frosted leaves hide the Buddhist Temple among the rocks; they give off a breath of freshness and delicacy in the imposing mountain scene. The layering of ink is rich; making use of the past artist’s theme, Wang Hui expresses his own delight in nature. This work of art is a gem of the painter’s later years.

History of the Object
Wang Hui himself named this piece of art Painting in Imitation of Wangmeng’s "A Desolate Temple in the Autumn Mountains". In the lower right hand corner two seals were stamped: “Laiqing Ge” (Laiqing Pavilion) and “Geng Yan San Ren” (different titles of the artist).
