Why this is a
Masterpiece

The artwork depicts an old musician with a long, white beard, who smiles enigmatically and emanates a feeling of wisdom. Drawing a bow across the two-stringed horse-head fiddle, he wears the traditional sable fur hat and a red, lamb’s wool-lined deel with black sable fur cuffs. The horse fiddle boasts finely drawn traditional design motifs, decorated with red and green. The portrait was created at Gandan Dashchoimbol monastery and is a depiction of the lama Tserennadmid. The artwork is considered to have a superior composition and is nationally recognized as an icon of the Mongol zurag style. Yadamsuren’s exceptional artistic skill remains highly respected in the current day as a highly significant example of Mongolian modern art.

History of the Object
Since the revolution during the 1940s and 50s, the revitalization of classical Mongolian painting styles has become a passionate cause for Mongolian artists, particularly D. Choidog, head of the former Department of Painting (now Union of Mongolian Artists), as well as painters U. Yadamsuren, D.Manibadar and A. Sengetsokhio who have actively sought to promote and produce classical Mongolian paintings. A highly celebrated artist, U. Yadamsuren has been recognized as a national icon and state laureate and was a key figure in the revitalization of the classic style Mongol zurag. In 1958, he created the well-recognized picture, Old Storyteller, a peaceful and delicate portrayal of Tserennadmid, a lama from the Gandan Dashchoimbol monastery. The historian, A.Bayarmagnai, has written about his father, Duuch Adiya, who lived with Tserennadmid at the Gandan Dashchoimbol monastery. He describes being shown a letter written by the Director of Pioneer House (Children’s Association) which states that Tserennadmid was indeed the subject of the portrait Old Storyteller.
