Why this is a
Masterpiece

Every detail of this silver bowl speaks of utter refinement and sensitivity, and its sole "rasion d’être" seems to be for its owner to drink golden wine from it while reciting beautiful poems from the great bard, Li T’ai-po. Per Dahlström, Curator, Röhsska Museum

History of the Object
This wine bowl, as light as a sheet of paper, is one of the masterpieces of the Röhsska Museum collections. It is a splendid example of the exquisite art of goldsmithery, which blossomed in China during the T’ang Dynasty (618–907 AD). Its approach to the medium and delicate fragility is in distinct contrast to that of the West. The design is simple and self-explanatory; the balance between decorated and plain surfaces is exquisite. The embellishments, made up of stylized plants and rosettes with elements of birds and mythical creatures although distinctly Chinese also display traces of Western influence, especially from the Persian Sasanian style, which made itself known in the handicraft of the T’ang period.
