Why this is a
Masterpiece

Unusually big denomination and design; very small issuing number; rare specimen.

History of the Object
The oldest preserved Korean coins come from the 11th-12th century AD. They copied the Chinese cash model – cast bronze flans with four symbols on their obverse (´sang pjong tong bo´) and a square hole in the middle. Since the second quarter of the 17th century up to the beginning of the 20th century, Korea had been a semi-independent territory under the Chinese domination, which kept the Chinese character of the coins in circulation. At the beginning of the 1880s, new silver coins without the hole were machine-struck of modern alloys in several monetary reforms introducing new dated denominations in various mutual relations (mun, fun, liang, chon, won). Generally, the official ´Korean´ coinage ceased to exist in 1910 after the Japanese annexation. After the Second World War new systems of the two Korean independent states were introduced.
