Why this is a
Masterpiece

The Meiji period hikifuda prints in the Manggha Museum’s collection had the functions of advertising handbills and New Year greeting cards. They are an interesting phenomenon, still pending detailed research, in the popular art of that era. They are also a source of knowledge about the urban society as well as the changes in Japan after the country opened to the Western cultural influences.

History of the Object
The object was purchased in Japan as part of 35 hikifuda handbills, as a starting point for a collection of such prints, to be included in the collections of the Manggha Museum.
