Why this is a
Masterpiece

According to the delicacy of execution there is no equal to this rhyton among similar artworks.

History of the Object
The rhyton was found during excavations of the ritual complexes and burial mounds of the Bronze Age in the vicinity of the village of Ulyap. The objects that were found belong to the Meotian-Scythian period (VI - IV centuries BC). Beginning with the Bronze Age and until the late Middle Ages the trade routes on the territory of Adygea promoted many contacts with other peoples. The culture of the tribes living there developed under the influence of the ancient civilizations of the East and Greece, Rome and Byzantium and absorbed some features of the cultures of the Fore-Caucasus and Northern Black Sea Region. The wide part of the rhyton is decorated with ornamental overlay plates and a relief frieze with scenes of gigantomachy. It is finished with the protomai (the forepart) of the winged horse Pegasus. The frieze consists of six separate compositions, each of which represents a duel of god and giant. The style and compositions of these scenes are similar to the metopes of the Parthenon.
