Why this is a
Masterpiece

The plate is painted in the Imari style of the early 18th Century and is one of the best of all the museum's Japanese porcelain collection, in which the Arita porcelain dominates. A vase with flowers is painted inside the central circle which is surrounded by phoenix and mei-hua, plum blossom. All these motifs come harmoniously together in the composition. The joyfulness of the colours and the typical Arita porcelain decorations have a particular brightness. The value of this object is its artistry, perfectly following the regional traditions of its epoch.

History of the Object
This plate is a very good example of a group of Japanese export pieces from the Arita workshops (Hizen province, southern part of Kyushyu) at the end of the 17th, beginning of the 18th Century.
