Why this is a
Masterpiece

Begtse is the protector of both the Dalai Lama and the Bogd Gegen. As the protector of Mongolia, he is the appropriate subject for a mask of visionary design and lavish materials.

History of the Object
Mask making became one of the greatest art forms practiced by Mongolian monks, who prepared and refurbished masks and dance costumes in the weeks before the Tsam performance, which occurred annually or biannually. They made the masks of papier mache and clay. Pieces of khatak, silk scarves often woven with prayers or mantras and given to lamas, were incorporated to ensure the sacred character of the work. The mixture of materials was formed in clay molds. When dry, the mask was sanded and painted, then gilded, jeweled and given a horsehair wig. The mask is of the Da Khuree style.
