Why this is a
Masterpiece

The figure of lying Bodhisattva is an example of a very refined sculpture. The Bodhisattva has a female shape and somehow brings to mind the sculptures of Guanyin. She is lying on one side (her body bends in a shape of wave) supporting the head with her left hand. Her right arm is a little bit curved and together with her right hand rests on a bent knee. The figure looks as if she was sleeping or resting -- her eyes are almost closed.

History of the Object
Emperors of Northern Dynasties were Buddhist and used the religion as a system for unifying their rule. Religious art became the essence of artistic creation at the time. Buddhism of the northern dynasties mainly followed the Lotus Sutra, Vimalakīrti-nirdśa Sutra and Mahāhparinirvāna Sutra. Sculptures very often depict the stout Shayamuni Buddha, Maitreya or Avalokiteśvara figures. From the early period, those of the middle period became more delicate. The figure of Bodhisattve from Torun’s collection seems to be from the middle of the northern Dynasties period but there is still no certainty in this matter. It was probably used for religious ceremonies in some temples.
