Why this is a
Masterpiece

The decorative scheme on this Buddhist temple bell consists of a single dragon head with a hollow post functioning as a resonator, bands of floral ornaments on the top and bottom, four shoulder panels each with nine knobs, and adoring apsaras on individual clouds rendered in low relief. This work is an exquisite example of a Goryeo Buddhist temple bell due to the large scale, splendid appearance, and decorations such as apsaras rendered in low relief.

History of the Object
This style of bell emerged during the Silla period and continued through the Goryeo period, displaying a uniquely Korean style which clearly distinguished itself from the styles of China and Japan. However, during the Joseon period the knobs were eliminated, and the style of incising numerous horizontal lines and long inscriptions along the body reflected a strong Chinese influence. Nonetheless, this particular bell faithfully demonstrates the Goryeo style, firmly based on the Silla prototypes, displaying the superb technique and aesthetic sensibility of time.
