Why this is a
Masterpiece

Repairing Cart is an undated batik painting. The treatment of the figures, the bullocks and the congested composition would indicate an early piece paving way for the more sophisticated paintings of his later years. There is a structured approach in the handling of forms. Volume is suggested in tonal planes and shapes are delineated in a Cubist manner. Colours are limited to a range of yellowish browns against a purple backdrop.

History of the Object
Chuah Thean Teng is the acknowledged pioneer of batik painting. Chuah Thean Teng adapted the indigenous craft media of dye on wax-resist for modern art expressions in the 1950s as Malaya obtained its independence. Capturing scenes of Malayan life, he's trajectory in batik painting was regarded as a direction in forging a Malayan identity in modern art. His early adaptations of the media extended in heavily delineated forms and flat surfaces that confess the influence of the traditional batik technique. He would later enlarge his formal vocabulary into greater stylisation and geometric abstraction to compose tight and rhythmic arrangements of interlocking patterns. Chuah Thean Teng was born in the Fujian Province of China. He trained at the Xiamen Art Academy before migrating to Malaysia and settling in Penang in the 1930s. His pioneering development in batik paintings has witnessed similar adaptations by artists in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.
