Why this is a
Masterpiece

The expression indicates composure and meditative absorption. The modeling of the face is based on the contrast between the rigid lines of the eyes, eyebrows and the high-placed base of the nose, and the soft, full contours of the cheeks, mouth and chin.

History of the Object
Owing to its evident inspiration by Classical sculpture, this form of representation of the Buddha used to be referred to as the Apollo-type Buddha. In Gandhara Buddhist art, between the 1st c. B.C.E. to the 6th c. C.E., the Indian, Persian and Central Asian tradition blended with influences of the Ancient Greco-Roman style. Stucco statues of the Buddha and Bodhisattva in high relief adorned the interiors of sanctuaries in monastery complexes.
