Why this is a
Masterpiece

Jeong Sang-gi was a geographer during the reign of King Yeongjo. His innovative "100-ri scale" was a breakthrough in Joseon cartography, and the map he and his son made was superior to contemporaneous government-made maps. Jeong's map greatly influenced Kim Jeong-ho when he created "Daedongnyeojido(Territorial Map of the Great East)" in 1861. It is designated as Korean Treasure No. 1538.

History of the Object
'"Donggukdaejido," or "Complete Map of the Eastern State," was produced in the 18th century by an unknown author on the basis of Jeong Sang-gi(1678-1752)'s "Donggukjido(Map of the Eastern State)." It includes the Northern part of the country, which had never been properly mapped before. The map employs the 100-ri scaling system devised by Jeong Sang-gi(100 ri = 1 cheok, in mountainous area 120-130 ri = 1 cheok), which greatly enhanced the overall accuracy of maps. Symbols are used to mark important geographical information, and major overland and sea routes are marked in red.
