Why this is a
Masterpiece

This dog´s head is an excellent representation of a living animal, it quivers with vitality.

History of the Object
The bronze dog´s head is either part of a complete animal or else was attached to an object in another material. It is realistically sculptured, with wrinkled brow, taut cheek muscles and prick ears. Casting seams and a large plum remain, as does the clay core. Below the neck a broad, receding collar suggests that the head was meant to fit into a corresponding hole. The patina is spotted green. During the Han Dynasty, China formed closer contacts with Asia and the Mediterranean area. Through these trade contacts new ideas spread eastwards and in China it resulted in a development in arts and crafts. Animal designs played an important role in art but then they became considerably more realistic in representation.
