Why this is a
Masterpiece

We have included this painting in the collection because it is a favourite of our visitors. When our permanent Asian exhibition had to be dismantled some years ago, we got many phone calls from people who told us that they missed “their” favourite object. Most of the callers asked when they could see this painting again. Ushnishasitatapatra or “The One with the White Umbrella” is a protector deity of Tibetan Buddhism. Her protection is especially powerful for beings that are situated in the northern direction: the northern hemisphere of the world, or north Germany, where our Museum is situated.

History of the Object
The painting was part of a collection that also included pieces from the Schlagintweit expedition of the mid-19th Century. We used to think that it had been acquired during this expedition. In the meantime, we were told that stylistic features, namely the incorporation of chinese-style plant depictions, point to it being painted around 1900 or in the early 20th Century. The central figure is executed quite masterly in central Tibetan style. The surrounding details show much less technical command. Their style points to the regions in western Tibet, Nepal or Sikkim. Possibly, this painting comes from a workshop in one of these regions whose master painter had studied in central Tibet.
