Why this is a
Masterpiece

This is the earliest dated Chinese bamboo carving known and effectively helps to date the esteemed Zhu School of bamboo carving, which Shen was a student of. This is perhaps the most important piece of bamboo carving in the West.

History of the Object
An inscription on the bottom of the carving indicates this piece was carved by Shen Dashen during the winter of the third year of the Tianqi Emperor (1623).
