Why this is a
Masterpiece

This Buddhist statue in enamelled stoneware is unusual as it bears an inscription on the side of the base giving details of the family (named Wang – father, wife and son) who paid for its making together with the names of the priest of the temple for which it was made (Dao Ji) and the craftsman who made it (Liu Zhen). The statue consists of a figure resting cross legged in the lotus position on a green, beige and black rock-work base. The figure is enamelled in dark green, amber and black. The head and hands are unglazed. There is evidence of paint decoration on top of the green and amber of the figure’s robes.

History of the Object
Luohan are Buddhist disciples who, having reached enlightenment, have remained among mortals to guide them to immortality. The eighteen Luohan are arranged in two groups of nine on either side of the central Buddha figures which form the core of the temple. This statue belongs to a group of three all bearing the same inscription the other two figures being at the British Museum in London and the Lady Lever Art Gallery in Merseyside.
