Why this is a
Masterpiece

The master painter Simon Flores y Dela Rosa was the first Filipino painter to win an international award, La Musicadel Pueblo at the Philadelpia Universal Exposition of 1876. His detailed rendering of portraits pay homage to the Filipino 19th century barongs, baro’t saya, and terno sewn delicately from piña cloth. The portrait painting of Don Jose Leon y Santos is a masterpiece of the eminent Filipino portraitist Simon Flores y dela Rosa because of the excellent rendering of the subject, the excellent and finely detailed brushstrokes of the barong worn and the overall excellence of painting technique. Portrait paintings by Simon Flores are considered very rare and are deemed priceless in today’s generation.

History of the Object
Jose Leon y Santos was the second son of Don Francisco Paula de los Santos, Gobernadorcillo of the qremio de mestizos of Bacolor, Pampanga, Philippines in 1821 and again in 1824, and Doña Luisa Gonzaga de Leon. Jose Leon y Santos was baptized by Padre Don Esteban Vergara on April 3, 1825. On January 25, 1851, he married Doña Arcadia Joven y Suarez with whom he had a son, Mariano. Upon the death of Doña Arcadia, Don Jose married her sister, Doña Ramona Joven y Suarez with whom he had seven other children, namely Juana, Gregorio, Tranquilino, Maria, Josefa, Fulgencio, and Luisa. Continuing the political tradition of the family, Don Jose Leon y Santos became the Gobernadorcillo of Bacolor in 1857. The oil portrait was painted by Simon Flores y de la Rosa, the eminent nineteenth century Filipino master in August 1887 when the subject was 59 years old.
