Why this is a
Masterpiece

This Chinese silk painting is a true masterpiece. Its delicate brush strokes emphasize the birds’ beauty, while the wispy grass creates a perfect background to the birds and in some way imparts depth to the work. Röhsska Museum has around 60 Chinese paintings executed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It forms an important part of the museum's Chinese handicraft collection. Josefin Kilner, Curator, Röhsska Museum

History of the Object
This Chinese silk painting is a good example of the silk paintings that arose in China during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Painting was an important art form in China, and ink had been used since earlier times. While the most common base was silk, paper also came into use later. The paint brushes used were made from animal hair, and they were put together with great care. Apart from ink made from cakes of pressed conifer-wood soot, minerals were also used to provide paintings with colour. Röhsska Museum’s painting depicts two birds; birds were a common silk painting motif, and artists strove to depict the creatures as realistically as possible.
