Why this is a
Masterpiece

The use of silver foil background contrasts with the gold foil background used by Kōrin on the reverse side. The summer grasses, as shown, are being battered by a sudden thunderstorm on the rear of the Thunder God screen, and the grasses depicted being blown by a strong early autumn wind appear on the rear of the Wind God screen. It is important Cultural Property.

History of the Object
These were originally painted on the rear of the screens “Wind God and Thunder God” by the artist Ogata Kōrin. They were commissioned by Tokugawa Harunari (Harusada), the head of the Hitotsubashi Family, and the father of the 11th shogun, Tokugawa Ienari.
