Why this is a
Masterpiece

This tile shows the faces of Goguryeo people. it is the only discovery of its kind until now. The tile has a voluminous lotus design and a human face with prominent ears, eyes, mouth and nose and is placed on the upper and lower parts. The face of a demon is placed to the left and right. This kind of design with both lotuses and human faces is original and appears only in roof- end tiles from the Goguryeo Period. This also provides an important resource which allows one to take a look at everyday life of the people at that time.

In 1964, Isao Iuchi obtained the collection of Ito Shobei, which had been gathered since the 1910s. Composed of Korean roof- end tiles, half of this collection was donated to the National Museum of Korea in 1987 and is currently exhibited in the Museum's Iuchi Isao Room at the Donations Gallery. The other half was utilized as research resource at the Iuchi Ancient Art Reaserch Institute until 2005, when director Changjong Yu obtained it. Now it is preserved at the YooGeum Museum of Roof-end Tiles.
