Why this is a
Masterpiece

Made from coarse pottery, the base of this jar is light and thin. It features a straight mouth, sloping shoulders, flat belly, round bottom and three nipple-like feet, entirely covered with thin cord patterns. This well preserved jar with typical decorations is an excellent example of Neolithic age artifacts found in Guangxi, presenting great value for the study of prehistoric culture in Guangxi.

History of the Object
From the early stages of the Neolithic age, pottery has been an indispensable part of the Zhuang people’s daily life. The most common decoration is the cord pattern, which was used widely up until the Bronze Age. The pattern is usually made by pressing: after cord has been coiled around a stick-like item with a thick middle and narrower ends, the device will be pressed against clay wares that have not yet dried, resulting in neat rows of cord patterns.
