Why this is a
Masterpiece

This figure was produced during the 15th century at the Chinese Imperial court. It was destined for the Imperial temple or as a gift for the Tibetan abbots whom the emperor revered. Such figures, which were created in China under Tibetan influence, are a focus of the Berti Aschmann Collection.

History of the Object: The female Bodhisattva Tara is filled with compassion for all creatures and promises to help them and protect them from all dangers. As a Bodhisattva, literally, 'enlightenment being', she has postponed her own Buddhahood until all creatures have found the path to enlightenment. According to what has been passed down, Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of compassion, was so distressed when he saw the countless suffering beings in the world that he began to weep. Out of this sea of tears arose Tara to assist him in his task.
