Why this is a
Masterpiece

The beautiful women depicted by Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) achieved world fame and undoubtedly contributed to the fact that the coloured woodcut in time came to be recognised as an independent art form.

History of the Object
In Japan, relatively little attention was initially paid to commercial art, which is comparable to advertising posters. However, when the printed papers arrived in the West as packaging material, they launched a veritable collecting craze. In this triptych, a group of women are moving through long grass, carrying paper lanterns, an indication that this is a depiction of an episode from the Stories of Ise (10th cent.). Utamaro transferred the well-known scene, illuminated by an enormous, silver moon to his own day and dressed the ladies in current fashions.
