The reason that this handaxe became a symbolic artifact from which human evolution can be traced is that it was produced by a human being who began to stand up and think. This handaxe with its edge sharpened was produced one million years after human beings produced the first tool in history.

This handaxe was excavated from the prehistoric site of Jeongok-ri, Yeoncheon, in Gyeonggi-do .
