Why this is a
Masterpiece

There are nine female portraits in the painting, including two palace women officials, and seven attendants. They wear high chignons shaped like a bun, shell or double spirals. Also typical are their three-piece garments: tight-sleeved jackets with chests exposed, shawls draping around the shoulders, and tri-colored (red, green and yellow) long striped skirts partially covering shoes with upturned toes. They are holding a candle stick, a round fan, a ruyi (S-shaped ornamental object), a square box, a basin and a stemmed cup and they are walking quietly.

History of the Object
Li Xianhui, the Princess Yongtai was the seventh daughter of Emperor Zhong Zong and grand-daughter of Gao Zong and the Empress Wu Zetian. A year after her marriage and only seventeen years of age the princess was put to death in the same fashion as her brother Li Chongrun, the Crown Prince Yide. The young, ill-fated bride was recognized posthumously as Princess Yongtai in 706. The tomb is renowned for the quality of the many items found in it as well as the extremely fine wall paintings. The murals have been removed to the Shaanxi Museum for safekeeping and replaced with replicas.
