Why this is a
Masterpiece

The calligraphy inscribed on the scrolls is the work of 27 calligraphers. The names of the calligraphers, together with their official titles at court, are given on a separate paper scroll with the title “Mokuroku” (index). The names of the painters are unknown, but it is likely that the paintings were done either at the same time as the calligraphy or shortly thereafter. These scrolls may have been commissioned for a special purpose, probably to mark the wedding of a daughter of a high-ranking court noble.

History of the Object
The Tale of Genji was written by Lady Murasaki Shikibu (ca. 973-1030) while she was a lady in waiting at the imperial court. It concerns the life and loves of Prince Genji. The fifty-four-chapter story, noted for its grand scale and tightly knit plot embracing four hundred characters, is still one of the most celebrated masterpieces in Japanese literature. This set of four scrolls (Genji Kotobae) is composed of fifty-four paintings, each with a chapter heading and brief extract from the text of the novel.
