Why this is a
Masterpiece

This cabinet-on-stand is unusual for its kind because it is constructed of carved ebony panels on a teak body. Inside, the front of the drawers and the interior of the doors are adorned with carved ivory panels. The stand has vase-shaped rather than twist-turned legs, with square caps above and below, and bun feet. The caps are linked by stretchers carved with floral and foliate tendrils. The entire body of the cabinet is faced with ebony panels carved in half relief. The carving on the ivory panels, executed in low relief on a hammered background, suggests the hand of an ivory-carver rather than the hand of a furniture-maker.

History of the Object
The fact that this type of carving was sometimes done by ivory workers from Ceylon is the reason for the alternative attribution to that country.
