1938

Why this is a
Masterpiece

The sides of the well-head model are decorated with remarkably realistic moulded patterns (bas-reliefs): a dragon and a tiger, a shooting creature and a mythical animal, and a camel and a dragon respectively. These creatures are mythical and guardian animals of the Han period. To our knowledge, there remained only a few pieces with such a rich decoration on each side, which increases the value of the model.

History of the Object
This rectangular, hollow well-head model, a characteristic piece of early square well-head models, was popular in Northern China during the Han dynasty. Indentations on the upper part indicate that a roof of bamboo or wooden framework, covered with earthenware, was joined to it. Also, there was a small platform joined to one of the longitudinal sides of the model.
